Eco-Schools is the world’s leading environmental education programme. In Northern Ireland this free programme is operated by the environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. Eco-Schools is a pupil-led initiative which aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. The programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school in a way that links into many curriculum subjects. Schools use a simple seven-step process to work towards achieving awards - bronze, silver and the prestigious, internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag. Teachers can access a range of free curriculum linked educational resources through the programme. Schools can also get involved in a variety of Eco-Schools projects, campaigns and events throughout the school year to help them on their Eco-Schools journey. The programme is delivered to schools throughout Northern Ireland in partnership with a range delivery partners including most local councils.
