P1 explored global issues through literacy, looking at a variety of colourful picture books with a global theme. These included Mama Panya’s Pancakes, a heart-warming story set in a Kenyan Village, plus Farid’s Rickshaw Ride, which is all about the links between Ireland and Bangladesh. They also read The World Came to My Place Today with their teacher. In this lively story, a boy is taught all about the world by his grandfather, who has come to visit with a globe in hand.
Global themes have been explored using nursery rhymes too. Pupils were introduced to the refugee crisis through a version of ‘There was an old woman who lived in a shoe’.
