Christ the Redeemer Primary School – Class charters
Location: 14 Lagmore Drive, Dunmurry, Belfast, BT17 0TG
Entry Date: 14 December 2017
Every class at Christ Redeemer Primary School, from P1 to P7, has a bespoke charter, setting out the rights and responsibilities of pupils as they work and learn. These charters are developed by the pupils themselves. Creating the charters is a very active process: Pupils familiarise themselves with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child before deciding which of the rights contained within it are most relevant to their classroom experience and therefore most appropriate for inclusion in their charter. Next, the specific terms of the charter are negotiated through discussions with the class teacher. Finally, the agreed charter is displayed somewhere where it is visible to all pupils in the class. The whole undertaking is empowering for learners and encourages mutual support and collaboration throughout the school.
