St Olcan's Primary School (Armoy) – Community of Enquiry

Location: 202 Glenshesk Road, Armoy, BT53 8RJ

Entry Date: 26 February 2018

To explore controversial issues and topics in the classroom, St Olcan’s Primary School uses a method called ‘Community of Enquiry’. In a Community of Enquiry, students are encouraged to explore issues together, discussing and debating ideas and using each other’s insights to expand their own knowledge.

For example, this method has been used with older pupils to expand discussions around topical news stories. With younger pupils, it has been used when they are looking at the meaning of poems or stories. One such discussion revolved around the poem If the World Were Small by Olaf Skarsholt, which is about climate change and humanity’s lack of action to protect the environment.

More information about the Community of Enquiry method can be found here.
